National Taco Day is celebrated on the 4th of October each year. As Mexican cuisine specialists, we know that you don’t need a special day to enjoy a delicious taco, but if there’s any day of the year that you should indulge a bit, then this should be it!
Americans love their tacos. According to Nationaltacoday.com, Americans ate over 4.5 billion tacos last year. That’s 490,000 miles of tacos, which could take you to the moon and back.
Tacos are the Mexican equivalent of the English word sandwich, but most people will agree that a taco is much more interesting than any plain old sandwich. Tacos predate the arrival of Europeans in Mexico. Anthropological evidence shows the native people living in the lake region of the Valley of Mexico traditionally ate tacos filled with small fish.
The taco tortilla, which is made of wheat or corn, is wrapped around a delicious concoction of spiced fish, pork or beef. Other popular taco ingredients include chicken, beans, eggs, cheese, salsa, avocado, onions, and other types of salsa and garnish.
Many restaurants and stores offer massive discounts, promotions, and specials to celebrate National Taco Day. Last year, Chipotle added the spicy Mexican sausage chorizo to their tacos and Taco Bell offered to share National Taco Day greeting cards.
