Traditionally, nachos are covered in cheese (particularly melted cheese) and served with salsa. This popular Mexican dish dates to 1943. It is believed that Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya created the original nacho snack. The story goes that a group of American military wives at Fort Duncan traveled to Piedra Negras to shop. When they stopped at a local restaurant for food, the restaurant was already closed. Ignacio, who was the Maître D’ at the restaurant, conceived the nacho and cheese snack to serve to the wives.
The enticing nacho snack was quickly recreated and the recipe spread swiftly through the Southwest and Texas. Today, nachos come in all forms and with a myriad of ingredients, such as:
